TOPIC:  Getting to the Roots of Dental Decay

SPEAKER:  Barbara Tritz BRDH, MS,   Specialist in Orofacial Myofunctional Therapy

TIME:  7:00 – 9:00

Defeated by repeated dental caries? Patients are frustrated when they do everything we recommend and still have new decay. Unfortunately, the best predictor of future decay is current decay.

It’s time to think beyond “more toothbrushing, flossing instructions, and fluoride” and get to the real roots of decay and solve this age-old problem.

-What is happening in the body that allows enamel, the hardest substance in the body, to literally dissolve?

-What is happening within the tooth that allows demineralization of enamel/cementum and ultimately dentin?

-Why do some people “get” decay while others who “never” brush have healthier teeth?

-How do we help these patients get well and maintain a healthy mouth?

-How can we predict who might be at risk for decay?

-We’ll explore nutrition, sugar (but not in the way you think), leaky gut, vitamin and mineral deficiencies, pH, dry mouth, emotions, sleep, breathing, fluoride, and even improper chewing. How do they combine to create the “perfect dental decay storm”?

-Tools, tips, and strategies to add to our armamentarium will be reviewed. Dental decay is at epidemic levels. Dental hygienists are prevention specialists. Let’s look at decay from a new preventive angle and truly defeat caries once and for all.

On completion of this course, the participant will be able to:

-Outline a dental caries prevention plan.

-Identify at-risk patients.

-Analyze products to include in self-care recommendations.

-Create a 21st-century Decay Prevention Program

-List the root causes of dental decay.
